2013 Review: Aussie Swag Ultra D

Camper Trailer Australia — 16 October 2013

We took the Ultra D to the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to put the trailer to a test of durability and toughness. Aussie Swag’s maturity and industry expertise really shines through in this model, with the galvanised trailing arm suspension system taking on the rocky river track with ultimate ease.

KITCHEN

The Ultra D’s kitchen is nothing short of impressive. It has an ingenious design that pulls out and swings around to easily snap into place alongside the trailer’s body, optimising space and access. With a stainless steel sink that features a hot and cold water mixer tap, extra bench space and a trailer-wide, insulated and LED-lit pantry drawer, this kitchen gets it right down to the last detail - even the cutting boards fold neatly into the trailer. This kitchen is perfectly set for long-term touring; with a four-burner Thetford stove, complete with a grill, and an 80L Waeco fridge/freezer in an insulated drawer with a ventilating fan, every last need is met.

TENT

Aussie Swag’s signature quality is stamped across this model, inside and out. The tent is made from high-grade canvas sewn locally in Brisbane and is easily assembled. The annex covering the kitchen area comes standard with two side walls and a skirt and can remain attached to the main tent. For the colder days or just for some added privacy, the front wall can be used to fully enclose the kitchen area and optional walls can create another separate room.

Inside this thoughtful design continues to impress. The polystyrene, fiberglass solid floor section of 2.2x1.7m provides a well-insulated space, perfect for the harsh Australian conditions. The Ultra D has exceptional quality finishes throughout; features like the upholstered galvanised steel tent frame and lining on all catch points are just some examples.

STORAGE AND POWER

The Ultra D has plenty of storage up front, easily holding a jerry can and two 4kg gas bottles, a sturdy Christine swing-up jockey wheel, a Vehicle Components mechanical handbrake and DO35 offroad coupling, a stoneguard and a separate cover for wet mats and flooring.

Aussie Swag have loaded the Ultra D with a total of 315Ah from three 105Ah East Penn Batteries, all found in the nerve centre under the bed. The batteries are easily charged when connected to the mains, with a huge 60A Sterling battery charger doing the job.

A Ctek DC-DC charger draws power from both an alternator and also from the 135W Kyocera solar panel, which has individual diodes to ensure it continues to work effectively if any damage to individual diodes occurs.

THE CAMPER TRAILER AUSTRALIA VERDICT

With all the modern luxuries and premium quality manufacturing it is not surprising the Aussie Swag Ultra D is top-seller for the Australian manufacture. Comfort and quality are no question in this offroad camper trailer that offers huge power capacity, insulated floors and a functional and luxurious kitchen. Whether you’re serious about extended touring or heading down the coast, the Ultra D will ensure great durability, safety and comfort.
