WHAT IS GRAMPING?

A survey has found that Australians are embracing ‘gramping’ — a new camping trend where multiple generations of families (grandparents, parents and kids) get together to enjoy the outdoors in campsites or backyards.

The survey, conducted on behalf of the recently launched Gramping Association, found that more than eight million Australian adults would like to go gramping.

In response, the Gramping Association was launched to provide a community of ideas, inspiration and knowledge on all things related to gramping. Membership to the group is free, with members able to receive gramping tips, events, offers and giveaways.

The popularity of the gramping phenomenon was prominently demonstrated last year at the inaugural Aerogard Great Gran and Grampout, where over 460 grandparents, parents and kids set up camp on Sydney’s Cockatoo Island to celebrate the first day of summer. Since then, nearly 1500 families across Australia have registered their own ‘grampouts’ at campsites and in backyards across the country.

Gramping ambassador, mother and former Olympian Brooke Hanson, says gramping is a fun activity for all generations.

“When I was younger I was fortunate enough to travel with my parents, who are now grandparents. Our children Cooper (4) and Billy (3 months) love gramping with the family. Gramping is a great chance to spend quality time together whether we are making our family’s special golden syrup dumplings, making sandcastles or laughing at pop’s loud snoring,” she said.

At a time where family sizes are shrinking and the number of people in the household has halved, holidaying with three generations is seen as beneficial to the social and wellbeing of children.

Stuart Lamont, Chief Executive Officer of the Caravan, RV & Accommodation Industry says bring many benefits to families.

“Gramping is a fantastic trend which has emerged in the Australian travel industry, bringing together three generations of family in the great outdoors. Multi-generational camping is a great way for kids and grandparents to spend quality time together and is a very cost-effective holiday too,” he said.

The launch of the Gramping Association has been made possible through the support of Aerogard and Mortein.
